This session provides an overview of Q-Methodology, a method for designing and executing systematic studies of subjectivity. In a Q study, participants sort statements developed through qualitative means based on their personal perspectives which are then factor analyzed and interpreted (quantitatively and qualitatively) to establish shared perspectives.

Dr. Erica Eckert is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education Administration in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University. She coordinates Kent State’s Institutional Research and Assessment certificate and teaches courses on information technology, assessment, and business administration in higher education. Her research interests focus on how institutions and units navigate systems and structures, and relies upon historical, qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches. She is currently conducting several studies using Q-Methodology and presented two papers at the most recent annual conference of the International Society for the Scientific Study of Subjectivity. Dr. Eckert has received several awards, including the Kent State University Gold Teaching Recognition Award for her project titled “Teaching Technology in Higher Education” in 2023. She is a member of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), Association for Institutional Research, OCPA (ACPA’s Ohio Chapter), the Society for College and University Planning, NASPA, and serves on the leadership team of the NASPA Assessment, Evaluation, and Research knowledge community.
